CHAPTER 22 – SABRINA: MIDNIGHT MEAL
Neha banged on the door of the bathroom as Rahul’s wet, naked body pushed me up against the slippery walls again, and I let out the quietest moan I could manage.
“Sabrina and Rahul,” my blunt granddaughter shouted, “you’re hogging the shower! Ellie needs some hot water before it’s all gone!”
“We’ve been caught red-handed!” Rahul laughed as he let me go with a naughty wet slap on the bum.
I quickly turned off the water to conserve the remaining drops for Ellie as Rahul tossed me a fluffy robe. As soon as we were covered, we slipped guiltily out of the bathroom, hand in hand, and I peeked around the hallway, hoping that Neha and Ellie were not standing there in a queue to greet us. Just as I breathed a sigh of relief, Neha appeared before us with a wide grin.
“My dearest honeymooners, as much as I love you, you really should get a room. And what a coincidence, there’s one now,” she winked. “Oh, and Gran, you’ll need this. I already stole your dirty clothes for the ladies’ round of laundry. In the meantime, you’ll have to wear this adorable number from Mum’s closet of mystery to dinner.”
I held up the elaborate gold and emerald ghagra before me. “Rahul gets to wear linen, and I have to wear that?!”
“It’s what Ravana thinks Kali’s female vessel should be wearing,” Neha explained with an eye roll. “The King of Darkness strikes again…”
“Isn’t the wide open midriff scandalous in Egyptian Islamic culture?” I fretted.
“Don’t worry,” Neha consoled me. “If your clothing is the only thing that works this staff into a judgmental tizzy tonight, then we will have achieved an amazing feat at our feigned human farce. Now, go enjoy your time together. You have two hours until dinner, and I’m sure the men’s clothes won’t be ready until the eleventh hour, since we don’t have any Yakshas around to keep things moving.”
“Yes, sir!” Rahul said with a jovial salute as he grabbed my hand, and we scampered down the hall towards our room.
“It’s all yours,” Neha informed poor, bewildered Ellie. “I suggest you bathe quickly. I suspect another shower or two are starting up right about now.”
Rahul closed and locked the door behind us as I stripped out of my robe and jumped onto the bed. Candles flickered throughout the room, and I reminded myself to thank Neha for her thoughtful, if a bit overbearing, support of our romantic life. Rahul joined me enthusiastically, and once again we were quickly intertwined in each other’s arms.
“You like it better when I’m warm, don’t you?” he asked confidingly as I settled into his nook.
“Perhaps I just need to get used to the new sensations.” I hoped that he would believe me, despite my white lie on the matter. “I certainly like being flown around in your arms. Everything has a bit of a trade-off, doesn’t it?”
“I suppose,” Rahul conceded. “And I must admit that it is a blessing that I can manage this particular trade-off.
